A day of hiking and site seeing in the Canadian Rockies is sure to work up an appetite; if you’re in the Canmore/Banff area, address your grumbling belly by heading to Field, British Columbia. This charming railroad town, famous for it’s Spiral Tunnels, is located just 20 minutes into BC. While the town is small, there is no shortage of things to do here. Takkakaw Falls is just a short drive away, as is Emerald Lake. While these attractions already put Field on the map, Truffle Pigs, the town restaurant is a great place to have a bite to eat.
The best way I could describe Truffle Pigs is as being a quaint, but also quirky mountain restaurant. There are ceramic pigs hanging from the ceiling and local art displayed on the walls. The bar has chalkboard written drink menus above it, along with their “house rules”. It’s a cute place.

When it comes to the food, well let’s just say that being in a small town doesn’t mean small taste. The food was filled with bright flavors and while the menu is small, there is something here for every taste.
I enjoyed the Grand Fiesta Flatbread for my dinner. This creation featured bacon, tomatoes, juicy corn, creamy avocado, mango-cilantro salsa, ancho-chile sour cream and topped with lime zest. The flatbread was done to a perfect “not too crispy, but not too floppy” texture and had enough flavor to still shine through despite all of the toppings. While I do love me some avocado, I am never sure about it’s presence on a flatbread, but Truffle Pigs changed my mind on this; the creaminess was a great balance to the crisp corn and acidity of the mango salsa.
While I may not be in the mountains often, rest assured if I am in the Banff area, I’m going to be making the trip to Field to enjoy Truffle Pigs again. The drive is worth it alone, not to mention the gorgeous mountain views you’ll enjoy on your way!
